Foam Drill

Recently the Department held a drill on our foam trailer. Members received an overview of the operation of the apparatus and the application of foam, followed by hands on time with the equipment.

The trailer carries 550 gallons of foam concentrate on board in carboys which allows up to 18,000 gallons of finished foam to be produced, depending on final concentration. The trailer carries a variety of appliances for handlines and master streams, and multiple lines can be put in use via a manifold. There is also a master stream device which is capable of being remotely controlled, a generator and scene lights.

The trailer is vital for fighting petroleum based fires; the district protects the Motiva facility in Sewaren which handles millions of gallons of petroleum products via its tankfarm, rail, tank truck and ship operations.

The foam trailer was purchased by Middlesex County via grants from the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergcency Management Agency. In an agreement with the County, Woodbridge hosts the apparatus, and will respond with it to any incident where it is needed in the County. In addition, the department is on call for any major incident throughout the state if needed.
